ABOUT THE DIGITAL MEDIA PYRAMID

The TAKEAWAY's John Hockenberry & The Digital Media Pyramid

From a very young age, we’re told to be honest, to tell the truth, and not to cheat. In most cases, we know when we’re breaking those rules. But in others, it’s not always so clear.

Take, for example, journalism in the digital age. People over a certain age generally know to follow a set of rules that applied before the internet. But for the young, savvy digital natives out there, the rules aren’t always so obvious.

It’s for this reason that journalist and journalism professor Benjamin Davis decided to write a new guidebook for today’s digital natives, clarifying what’s plagiarism and what’s not. His ebook is called "The Digital Media Pyramid replaces the century old Inverted Pyramid."

Tallahassee Democrat on The Digital Media Pyramid

"The world will very soon be composed of a billion media barons thanks to digital technology and mobile devices.  As a result, people will be communicating information in whatever styles and formats that best suit them.  But what is always suitable to the writer may not be the best way of communicating to the reader. The Digital Media Pyramid offers a standard approach to Internet writing that helps the casual writer practice techniques used by professional writers..."

"How shall we go about our work after producing content? The Digital Media Pyramid teaches us."

Natalie Sgro, Former Quinnipac Journalism Student

"As a journalism student, I would love to see one of my professors use the Digital Media Pyramid in one of my classes. The inverted pyramid is a great building block, but an updated version will help journalists cope with the demands of the fast-moving digital world. Finding a balance between journalism and new technology is not an easy feat, but techniques like the Digital Media Pyramid can help us all adapt together."

Dr. Jack Rosenberry on The Digital Media Pyramid

"In the inverted pyramid, the width is a metaphor for importance -- wider at the top means more important, narrowing as it goes down to less-important material. In the digital media pyramid I'm guessing the width is a metaphor for breadth of the presentation, or perhaps the number of elements or individuals contributing to it?..."

"The advent of the Internet and digital age of communications has brought forth the expected decline of newspapers at a faster pace than many business journalism experts predicted. A major part of the decline results from publishers not adjusting their products and news gathering techniques fast enough to changing technologies. Publishers competed in a digitally dominated world using analog-based technologies, business models and journalism techniques..."
